Why the Marin Headlands are a Cyclist’s Dream

I’ve been cycling the Headlands for over three decades and every ride has been filled with awe for me. Here’s why I think they’re perfect for any cyclist traveling to San Francisco:

  • Accessible Adventure: Part of the Golden Gate National Recreational Area, which spans across San Francisco and areas of Marin County, the Headlands are remarkably easy to reach. Simply traverse the bike lanes on the Golden Gate Bridge, and within minutes you can be climbing challenging hills or dropping down thrilling gravel trails and roads.
  • Varied Terrain and Riding Options: The Headlands encompass 19 square miles of gentle hills, scenic beaches, lagoons, trails and fire roads perfect for gravel biking and mountain biking, plus tranquil roads—some with protected bike lanes—ideal for road cycling. Though technically not part of the Marin Headlands, the adjacent Mount Tamalpais State Park (birthplace of mountain biking) and Frank Valley, which includes Muir Beach, further extend the terrain suitable for gravel and mountain biking adventures.
  • Challenging Climbs: Thanks to the mixed topography of multiple valleys and hills, you can climb thousands of vertical feet in this compact area. The most iconic climb and thrilling descent is Hawk Hill, which can be tackled with a road bike and offers panoramic views that will take your breath away—though that might also be from the gradient.
  • Rich Flora and Fauna: Keep your eyes open as you ride. Hawks circle overhead and you can commonly spot other bird species, bobcats, coyotes, and deer.
  • Fascinating Military History: The area has a compelling military heritage, being home to several decommissioned sites including Nike Missile Site SF-88 used to guard against Soviet bombers and various coastal defense batteries, such as Battery Townsley with its 16-inch caliber gun that could fire a 2,100-pound shell up to 25 miles out to sea.

The Little Further: Cycling to the Pelican Inn

If you have a little extra time, one of my favorite rides is gravel cycling to the quaint Pelican Inn, an English pub, restaurant, and lodge at Muir Beach, which I call my “Secret Rifugio”. This ride combines everything the Headlands have to offer—challenging climbs (over 4,500’ total), coastal views, and a rewarding destination where you can fuel up and enjoy a well-deserved celebratory beer before cycling back.

From Muir Beach, adventurous cyclists can also climb up to Muir Woods and hike through a majestic ancient redwood forest characterized by towering, centuries-old trees, lush fern-carpeted floors, and a serene, cathedral-like atmosphere. It’s a magical addition to any cycling day.

A Little Longer: Bikepacking Opportunities

For those interested in multi-day adventures, the Headlands and the broader Marin County offer excellent bikepacking options. The closest campsite to San Francisco is the rudimentary Hawk Camp, which you can reach in less than a couple of hours via gravel trails. From the campground, as you would expect you can watch hawks and you can also admire the San Francisco skyline and observe ships enter San Francisco Bay. For those looking to extend their adventure, there are additional campgrounds in Mount Tamalpais State Park, such as Pantoll Campground. And for those not wanting to camp, lodging options include the Pelican Inn, the Mountain Home Inn near the top of Mount Tamalpais or, further out along the Bolinas Ridge Trail, Olema House in Point Reyes.

Squeezing In Time to Cycle

To make the most efficient and effective use of your free time during your trip to San Francisco, I will organize your bike rental (road, gravel, MTB or e-bike) and design and lead your customized tour of the Headlands and beyond. I’ll tailor the routes and stops based on your fitness level, cycling skills, and desires. Vine Trail Adventures is also an independent affiliate of Fora Travel, thus we can book your hotel accommodations, which often include exclusive perks available to Fora Advisors. Contact us to get started with lodging reservations. Some of our favorite properties for guests because they have easy and safer access to the Headlands are:

  • Cavallo Point Lodge, which is across the bridge in Sausalito, adjacent to the Headlands and minutes away from the trails and popular road cycling routes. It has post-ride recovery spa facilities, a fantastic restaurant and bar and views of the Golden Gate Bridge. The property is a Fora Reserve Partner, thus booking through us gives you access to exclusive perks, such as resort credits and, based on availability, upgrades and early check-in/late check-out.
  • On the San Francisco side, we recommend the Lodge at the Presidio which is within the Golden Gate National Recreational Area, which the Headlands is part of, and is adjacent to the Golden Gate Bridge. The hotel was established from rehabilitated historic barracks and in addition to modern rooms with high ceilings it has secure bike storage, views of the Golden Gate Bridge and outdoor fire pits, so you can experience nature 24/7. It’s also next to our typical starting point in San Francisco.
  • The Fairmont Heritage Place and Argonaut Hotel are two properties, which offer shorter access to downtown, including via cable car, but are also next to a coastal bike path that safely takes you out to the Golden Gate Bridge. Both have workout facilities and are Fora Preferred partners, so booking through us also gives you access to exclusive perks.

Whether you’re looking for a three- to four-hour tour, a full day adventure, or want to organize a multi-day tour with hotel stays and/or camping options, I’ll design an experience you won’t forget and make sure you’re back in time for that work dinner or breakfast. To get started, book a tour or schedule a call with me.
